For the first half of the game, Union and Army were locked in a tight contest. Carr got Union on the scoreboard at 6:22 of the first period, beating Clark high on a rebound in front to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Army's Mark Dube answered with a shorthanded breakaway goal at 12:16, beating Kinkaid between the pads to tie the game.

Union would go on to outshoot Army 38-5 the rest of the way, and held a 53-18 shot advantage for the game.
