Dutchmen end season with 74-59 loss at St. Lawrence

Ralph Temgoua scored 21 points with 11 rebounds to lead top seed St. Lawrence University to a 74-59victory over #4 seed Union College in a Liberty League Men's Basketball Semifinal Game Friday night at Burkman Gym. The Saints (15-11) will host Hobart Saturday at 3 p.m. for the league championship. The Dutchmen finish their season with a 12-13 record.

 

Andy Hoercher scored 16 points and Josh Sharlow added 11 for the Saints, who shot 46% for the night and had a 39-25 rebounding edge. Sharlow had five assists in the victory. St. Lawrence made 10 of 11 free throws on the night.

 

Senior guard Joey Lokitis finished his career with eight points in this game, giving him 1,038 points for his career. Drew Goldstein scored 11 points with a team high five boards and Keven Donohue closed out a fine freshman season with 10 points. Rusmir Dzanko also scored 10 for Union, which shot 41%. Union shot 58% in the second half.

 

St. Lawrence never trailed in the contest. With 12:31 left in the first half, Evan Croll hit a three pointer from the right corner to make it 11-9 St. Lawrence. But 2:16 later Sharlow hit a three and started a run of 16-2 that made it 27-11 Saints with 3:26 left. Temgoua had five points during that run. He also made three free throws when he was fouled on a three point attempt with 35 seconds that provided the halftime score of 30-13.

 

Temgoua had eight points and eight rebounds at the half, and Hoercher had seven points as St. Lawrence shot 37% and had a 22-13 rebounding edge entering the locker room. The Saints held the Dutchmen to 18% shooting in the first half, and Croll had six points at that point.

 

A three pointer by Hoercher 2:11 into the second half gave the Saints a 36-16 lead, but the Dutchmen pulled to within 14 at 15:48 remaining on two free throws by Joseph Mason. Union got as close as 12 with 10:50 left on a jumper by Dzanko to make it 47-35. But the Saints got it up to 19 at 59-40 with 7:01 remaining on a three pointer by Hoercher. Goldstein's three at 5:41 made it a 13 point game at 61-48, but that was as close as the Dutchmen would get the rest of the way and Saints led by as many as 20 (74-54) with 1:52 left.

 

This is only the third time in the last 12 seasons that the Dutchmen did not have a record of .500 or better to end the season.
