Rachel Titcomb had 14 points with 11 rebounds but the Union women's basketball team lost at Hamilton, 58-50 at Scott Field House Saturday. The Continentals improved to 12-7 overall and 5-4 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen lost for the fifth straight time and now stand 6-14 overall and 4-6 in the league.
Hamilton's Madie Harlem led all players with 20 points and Alex Sowinski added 13. Reisa Asimovic pulled down 11 rebounds for the Continentals in the victory. Hamilton shot 35% while Union shot 38%, but the Continentals forced 20 turnovers and outrebounded the visitors, 39-34.
Hamilton took a 34-26 lead into the half. After a three pointer by Sowinski, the Continentals had a 17 point lead at 19-2 with 12:59 left in the half. Hamilton also led by 17 with 7:29 left, 24-7, but the Dutchwomen closed the gap with a 11-2 run in the next 8:30, making it 26-18.
In the second half, Union trailed by seven after a jumper by McCormick made it 36-29 1:32 into the period. But in the next 5:47 the Continentals went on a 12-5 run featuring five points by Harlem for a 14 point lead. Union came back late and got as close as six, when McCormick completed a three point play with 1:18 left to make it 56-50. After a turnover and then a Union miss and rebound, the Dutchwomen missed a three pointer with 36 seconds left and the Continentals went to the line after a foul. Sowinski made both with 23 seconds left for the eight point lead and the eventual final, 58-50.
Union returns home next weekend. Friday night the Dutchwomen will host Vassar at 6 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center, then hosts RPI Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday will feature "NCAA Take a Kid to the Game Day," with post-game autographs for youngsters and as always, free admission for all fans.
