Dutchmen lose to Allegheny despite comeback

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -
The Union College baseball team lost a hard-fought, nine-inning game to Allegheny Wednesday by a score of 9-7 at Lake Myrtle Field. With the win, Allegheny is 6-4 while the Dutchmen move to 2-4.

The Gators scored two runs in the eighth inning to give them the win over the Dutchmen. Substitute left fielder James Kim hit a single to right field to send first baseman Matt Stahl home and score the go-ahead run while second baseman Jeff Dassner hit a single to center field to send Kim home.

Matt Dishong earned the win for the Gators while Matt Rogers suffered the loss.

Starting pitcher Drew Amboian pitched only the first inning but lefty Colin McKelligan pitched five strong innings in relief, allowing five hits and striking out four. He did not allow a base hit in the first five at bats he faced.

Allegheny starting pitcher Frank Brank pitched five innings, allowed eight hits and struck out six.

The Gators, designated as the home team, scored first when a single to left field by designated hitter Ben Lowmaster drove in center fielder Eric Hansen. During the play, a bad throw by short stop Dylan Katz-Wicks allowed Lowmaster to advance to second and move short stop Aaron Lynch to third. Allegheny later added four runs in the first inning to give them a 4-0 lead.

Union's first run scored came in the third inning when Katz-Wicks hit a line drive to center field to send catcher Ben Price home.

First baseman Joe Privitera cut Allegheny's lead down to half when a long hit to left center gave Union its first home run on the season in the fourth inning.

It was déjà vu for Katz-Wicks and Price in the fifth inning. Katz-Wicks hit deep to left center for a double and allowed Price to run home from second base, cutting Allegheny's lead down to one run.

Union tied the game in the sixth inning when right fielder Paul Mene scored from third on a passed ball. Price's sacrifice fly later in the inning gave Union a 5-4 lead.

Pinch hitter Tyler Heck reached first base safely on a hopper to Lynch but the short stop made a bad throw to first attempting the force out. The passed ball allowed Heck to advance to second and send Price home from third en route giving the Dutchmen a 6-4 lead.

Allegheny tied the game at six runs apiece in the bottom half of the six inning when a double to the outfield by Dassner brought pinch hitter Matt Barclay home.

The Dutchmen are scheduled to be idle Thursday. Their next opponent is Lawrence on Thursday. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
