Union 10, Southern Vermont 9
SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior third baseman
Dane Flavin registered three legs of the cycle, helping the Union College baseball team to rally for a 10-9 victory against Southern Vermont on Thursday afternoon. Flavin picked up a single, double and triple, going 3-for-4 on the day with four runs batted in. The win improves Union to 8-24, while the loss moves Southern Vermont to 11-18.
Flavin helped get the bats going early for the Dutchmen with a two-out, two-RBI double to left center, giving Union a 3-0 lead after one. The Dutchmen added to their lead an inning later with an RBI single by freshman centerfielder
Tyler Heck.
After the Mountaineers cut the Dutchmen's lead to 4-3 in the top of the third thanks to a pair of RBIs by sophomore catcher Eric Wells (Athens, PA), Union reestablished a four-run lead with three more runs in the bottom of the third. Flavin was responsible for two of those runs with a single with one out.
A defensive lapse in the top of the sixth allowed Southern Vermont to take the lead. Union committed three errors in the inning and allowed six unearned runs. Senior shortstop Brett Pawlak came through with a triple with one out to score three runs.
After freshman catcher
Marc Douglas homered in the bottom of the sixth, the Dutchmen made their winning push in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman pitcher
Phil Kemp led off with a double. He would later score, along with senior
John Johnson when freshman second baseman
Matt Barretto hit a game-winning single to right field.
Kemp was credited with the victory after coming in in relief and striking out a batter. Junior
Jeremy LeFebvre earned the save.
The Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, May 1 with a noon doubleheader at Skidmore.
