Dutchmen rally for 21-8 victory against Cobleskill in home opener

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College baseball team hosted its first home game of the season at Central Park, earning a 21-8 victory against SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday evening. The Dutchmen, which produced a season-high for runs, improve to 4-10, while the Fighting Tigers go to 2-17.
 
Senior DH Paul Mene and freshman first baseman Phil Kemp led the Dutchmen's offensive efforts with four RBI each. Mene was 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored, while Kemp went 3-for-4 and crossed home three times.
 
Freshman catcher Ethan Peck also had a productive showing at the plate, going 3-for-6 with four runs and two RBI. Freshman first baseman Dylan Katz-Wick knocked in three runs and scored the times after going 2-for-4.
 
On the bump, Union employed nine pitches – one an inning. Senior Andy Brown earned the win with his one-strikeout-one-hit performance in the fourth inning. Sophomore Kevin Dexter did log 1.1 inning of work and whiffed a game-high three batters.
 
The Fighting Tigers were led by sophomore shortstop Tim Pyszcynski, who registered three RBI thanks to a two bagger in the first inning. He finished 1-for-3 on the day. Sophomore leftfielder Andrew Murray produced a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and sophomore first baseman Keith Millione went 2-for-6.
 
Cobleskill jumped out on Union with four runs in the first inning, but the Dutchmen fought their way back, tying it at 5-5 at the end of the third innings. After Brown shutdown the Tigers at the top of the fourth, Union produced four runs to take the last lead of the game.
 
Katz-Wick began the scoring in that inning, reaching home on an error and Kemp followed with a triple to centerfield to score two runs. Junior left fielder Anthony Cassese then scored Kempt with a sac fly to right field.
 
The Dutchmen controlled the rest of the game, producing two runs in the fifth and seventh and eight in the eighth.
 
Union opens Liberty League play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at St. Lawrence on Saturday, April 10.
