Dutchmen lose two to Skidmore

SCHENECTADY, NY –
On a humid Sunday afternoon at Central Park, the Union College baseball team lost a pair of games to Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds defeated the Dutchmen 11-1 in game one and 4-3 in game two.

Skidmore improves to 25-10 overall and 14-6 in Liberty League play while Union falls to 9-27 overall and 2-18 in the league.

In game one, Anthony Ferri went 3-for-4 with three RBI and he circled the bases once. Leejay Pollacchi went 3-for-5 and scored in a run. Adam Cornachione went 2-for-2 with an RBI and reached home twice. Spencer Marcus pitched a complete, allowing only one run, five hits, one walk and struck out four to improve his record to 8-1 on the year.

For the Dutchmen, John Johnson, who went 2-for-2 with a home run to left center in the third inning. Andrew Catellier, who suffered the loss, falls to 1-5 this season.

In the top of the second inning, Ferri led off the inning with a triple to right center field and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Jake Mendell would drive two more runs in later in the inning with a single up the middle. Ferri made a second appearance in at the plate in the second inning and a double to left field drove in two more runs.

In the second game, Kevin Dexter and Phil Kemp both went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Andy Brown kept the Thoroughbreds hitless until the sixth inning. He allowed one hit and two earned runs. Brown left the game with a no-decision. Drew Amboian pitched 3.1 innings but suffered the loss and falling to 1-1.

Ferri, Marcus and Brian Lowry were recorded a hit. Lowry, Rob Rubenstein and Geoff Green each drove in the three runs. Nick Laracuente pitched eight innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win and improve his record to 6-1. Zach Rudman closed the game to earned his fifth save on the season.

The Dutchmen put themselves on the scoreboard quickly. After Tyler Heck was hit by pitch to lead the game off for the Dutchmen, followed by stealing second base and advancing on a fielding error, Dexter singled to shortstop to bring Heck in from third.

After back-to-back walks by Nick Pisani and Rubenstein in the start of the fifth inning, Pisani tied the game 1-1 on Green's ground out to short. While Mendell attempted to steal second after drawing a walk, a throwing error to second allowed Rubenstein to reach home and give Skidmore a 2-1 lead.

But Union regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. After reaching first base on a single to left field, Dane Flavin advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch and a single to right field by Kemp allowed Flavin to tie the game 2-2. Kemp gave Union a 3-2 lead after reaching home on a wild pitch.

It was in the ninth inning when the Thoroughbreds scored the go-ahead run. After Barber reached first base on a walk and replaced by Matty Tatkow, Lowry's double to right field sent Takow home from first.

Both teams return to action on May 4. Skidmore returns home to face SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m. while Union hits the road to face SUNY Cobleskill at 3 p.m. Union and SUNY Cobleskill were originally scheduled to play on April 28 due to implement weather.
