Seniors help Dutchmen baseball sweep Vassar

Game 1: Union 7, Vassar 6   |   Game 2: Union 4, Vassar 3

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY --
Playing in their final collegiate weekend, the Union College baseball seniors came through in a big way, helping the Dutchmen sweep Vassar in a doubleheader on Saturday. Union took game one, 7-6, and won game two, 4-3. Seniors Colin McKelligan, John Johnson and Paul Mene combined for a total of seven RBIs as the Dutchmen improve to 12-28 on the year and 4-17 in the Liberty League.

McKelligan went 1-for-4 in the first outing, driving in two RBIs and followed on the mound in the second game, providing two-thirds inning of relief. Johnson was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs in game one, while Mene went 1-for-5 with an RBI in the early contest, and 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the late game.

After McKelligan's RBI in the first inning of game one, Vassar took the lead with a run in the first and a pair in the second. Union responded in the top of the third with two runs on three hits. In the fifth, Mene singled to score freshman Dylan Katz-Wick and Johnson followed shortly after with a two-RBI triple.

Again, the Brewers responded, tying the game, 6-6, with three in the sixth, but a lead-off triple by freshman Tyler Heck set up the game-winning run when McKelligan hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score the freshman.

Sophomore Kevin Dexter earned the win with two-and-a-third innings of relief and junior Jeremy LeFebvre picked up his third save of the year.

In the second game,  Union did its offensive work in the fourth and sixth innings, scoring a pair of runs in each. Junior Anthony Cassese scored Katz-Wick with an RBI single and later scored when Mene doubled to left center.

In the sixth, junior Peter Mugford led off with a double and Mene drove in the first run with a single. Moments later Dexter singled to center to score Mene, giving Union its fourth run of the game.

Freshman Seth Roberts earned his second career win after going five-and-a-third and whiffing five batters. Again LeFebvre provided the save.

The two teams will do battle again on Sunday, starting at noon at Central Park. The five seniors on the team will be recognized in between games.
