Field Hockey gets first win in impressive fashion

The Union College field hockey team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 4-0 victory over WPI in its home-opener. WPI fell for the first time of the season, entering the game with a 3-0 mark.

 

Union used balanced scoring throughout the game to defeat the Engineers, tallying two goals in each half. The Dutchwomen made its presence known early on the when senior Kelsey Powers scored off a Tyler Willey pass just over two minutes into the game.

 

At 23:17 Union notched another goal when Isabel Zellweger beat a few defenders to the right side of the goal and sent a shot past the goalie.

 

Willey kept the scoring going early in the second half with a goal from a Caroline Moran pass at 40:26. With under ten minutes to play the Dutchwomen scored for the final time when Ali Flake fed a pass to Kristin O'Connor for a goal.

 

Between the posts Sarah Rios earned a shutout and win, stopping five WPI shots. WPI's goalie Aileen Caceres (Fall River, MA) had three saves in the game.

 

Union will return to action Wednesday at 5 p.m. when it hosts Utica at Frank Bailey Field.
