Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Powers powers Dutchwomen to 2-1 field hockey win

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY --
Senior forward Kelsey Powers scored both goals, including the eventual game winning score 11:28 into the second half, to lead Union College to a 2-1 field hockey victory over Utica College in a non-league contest Wednesday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.

With the win, the Dutchwomen improved to 2-1 while the Pioneers fell to 2-2 on the young season.

The Dutchwomen came back from an early 1-0 deficit. Utica senior forward Lindsey Jester got a pass from Erin Murphy off a corner and scored the first goal of the contest just 5:46 into the game. The Dutchwomen tied it when a corner was called as the clock ran out in the first half. But a corner must be completed if called prior to the clock running out, and Powers tied it on this play. Lauren Winchell fed Powers, who shot low through a crowd to tie the game with her second of the season.

With 23:32 remaining in the second half, Powers notched #3 of the year and #2 on the day. A corner from Caroline Moran went right to Powers, who fired it inside the goalkeeper's right corner for the 2-1 lead.

As was the case at the end of the first half, a corner was called as time ran out. This time, it was Utica, looking to send the game to overtime. Avion Ashton's shot to the left of the Union net was wide after the corner and the Dutchwomen thus were victorious.

Union had a 22-14 shot advantage and also had 12 corners to Utica's five. Sarah Rios made five saves in the Dutchwomen nets while Monica Storms stopped 14, including 11 in the second half.

Union opens Liberty League play Saturday when the Dutchwomen play at Skidmore at 2 p.m.
