SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Jennifer Mansfield scored twice to lead the Dutchwomen's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Westfield State College in the Dutchwomen Classic at College Park.
With the win, Union improved to 4-0 on the season, while Westfield State fell to 0-5.
The deciding goal came midway through the second half, with Union holding a 2-1 lead. At 64:15, Jennifer Mansfield scored from inside the six-yard box off a pass from her younger sister, freshman forward Melissa Mansfield. The goal was Mansfield's team-leading fifth score of the season, and gave Union a 3-1 advantage.
The Owls cut into Union's lead on a breakaway goal by Kelsey Leandro, her second goal of the game at 78:52, but were unable to even the match in the final minutes.
Jennifer Mansfield opened the scoring in the contest, receiving an end line pass from junior forward Jessica Strang outside the six yard box for a goal at 32:47 of the first half.
Union took a 2-0 advantage at 34:12 when sophomore forward Taylor Bresnahan converted a cross from sophomore midfielder Michaela Katz.
Westfield State got on the scoreboard just before the end of the half when they were awarded a penalty kick on a foul inside the 18-yard box at 43:49. Leandro converted the penalty with a strike into the left side-netting.
The Dutchwomen will face the University of Rochester in their next contest on Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. in Rochester, N.Y.
