ROCHESTER, NY - A young defense withstood furious pressure as the University of Rochester defeated Union College, 1-0, in women's soccer at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Union outshot Rochester, 24-12, and held a 13-3 advantage on corner kicks (9-1 in the second half). The Yellowjacket defense – two seniors, a sophomore, and a freshman, blocked half a dozen shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Bridget Lang made eight saves to earn her second shutout this year.
The game's only goal came off a rebound. Rochester's Bridgette Varin hit a long ball from left wing that Union goalkeeper Abby Stohler parried near the back post. The ball rolled free and Rochester's Rachel Wesley knocked in the rebound at 31:13.
Union's pressure came in waves. Barely 14 minutes into the match, Lang got trapped outside the penalty area . Union fired three shots. The Rochester defense blocked shots by Jessica Strang and Jennifer Mansfield. Rachel Cohen put the final rebound over the crossbar. Seven minutes later, Strang and Mansfield both had shots blocked by the Rochester defense after Mansfield's corner kick.
Early in the second half, Melissa Mansfield weaved along the left endline and shoved the ball into the goalmouth. Strang's shot for the left side was tipped away by the defense for a corner kick. Union had a goal called back for offside with 28 minutes left. Midway through the half, the ball came to Jennifer Mansfield directly in front of goal. Lang slid out to cut off the cross, but it got past her. With the goal open, Mansfield's try at the equalizer was blocked by Rochester sophomore back Alaina Wayland.
Both teams hit the woodwork late. Rochester's Kirsten Ross took a corner kick from the right corner to the back post. The ball was chipped outside the box where Rochester's Kristina Diaz ran onto it. Her shot struck the crossbar. Two minutes later, Lang challenged again in her defensive end. With the net open, Strang's dribbler rolled off the left post.
Rochester is 5-1 and hosts Wheaton (Ill.) on Saturday. Union (4-1) goes to St. John Fisher.
