Union edges St. John Fisher with late goal

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -  A late goal would break a scoreless tie to send the Union College Dutchwomen home with a 1-0 win over the hosting St. John Fisher College Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.

The first half saw an even playing field, with each team seeing their chances, but neither able to capitalize.

Both teams came out firing in the second half.  Two offsides calls against Union would dismiss opportunities throughout the half, but a line of shots would eventually end in a goal.  Following two saves by St. John Fisher goalkeeper Jessica Plukas, sophomore forward Jennifer Mansfield would land a corner kick directly over junior forward Jessica Strang, who headed the ball past Plukas and into the left corner.

Union outshot the Cardinals 16-5 overall, and saw eight corner kicks to Fisher's zero.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Stohler made three saves for her second shutout of the season.

The Dutchwomen, now 5-1 overall, return to action at College Park when they take on Hamilton College on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
