Union defeats No. 21 Hobart with shutout

GENEVA, N.Y. –Union College defeated the No. 21 Hobart College soccer team 2-0 this afternoon in a Liberty League game played at Cozzens Field. Union scored two goals in the opening 11 minutes, 16 seconds to secure the win.
 
The Statesmen are now 4-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play. The Dutchmen improve their record to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the league. With the win, Union tied up the all-time series between the teams, which now stands at 15-15-5.
 
The Dutchmen got on the scoreboard first in the eighth minute. After a Union throw-in, sophomore Chris Choquette riffled a shot at the goal from 18 yards out. It was his first goal of the season. Then in the 12th minute, a corner kick for Union was taken by junior Kevin Giron. He sent a pass into sophomore Sebastiaan Jansen who sent a header into the back of the net. Jansen leads the Dutchmen with six goals this season.
 
Early in the second half, the Statesmen had a chance to get on the scoreboard. Sophomore Will Abbott (Riverdale Country Day/Irvington, N.Y.) sent a bicycle kick just wide of the goal. With 12:37 left in the game, junior Andres Rios (Great Neck North/East Elmhurst, N.Y.) drilled a shot on goal that was saved by Union junior Scott Reddy. Hobart had another chance with 7:19 on the clock when junior Tony Yeboah (Deering/Portland, Maine) sent a pass to junior Lukas Petersen (Burlington/Burlington, Vt.) whose bicycle kick was saved by Union's junior goalie Adam Margulies.
 
The Statesmen had two more  scoring opportunities late in the second half. With 5:39 left, first-year Eli Vitale (Red Creek/Red Creek, N.Y.) took a shot from right in front of the goal that was saved, and with 2:56 remaining, a header by Petersen went just left of the goal.
 
Margulies finished with three saves in goal for Union. Sophomore Stephen Bruening (Trinity/Mechanicsburg, Pa.) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Statesmen and had five saves. Hobart held a 15-12 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
 
The Dutchmen will return to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they travel to face Bard College.
