Dutchmen fall to Skidmore in league opener, 67-41

-- Keven Donohue scored 15 points and grabbed eight boards  to lead Union but four Thoroughbreds scored in double figures as host Skidmore won 67-41 in the Liberty League opener for both teams on Tuesday night.
 
Evan Croll, Drew Goldstein, Matt Rogers, and Matt Covvuci all had six points. Covucci also had two steals and four rebounds.
 
Melvis Langyintuo led Skidmore with 15 points. Also scoring in double figures were Gerard O'Shea and John Mantas with 10 each and Kyle Clark who had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Dutchmen led early in the game 3-0 at 19:17 but consecutive three-pointers by O'Shea and Jeff Altimar gave Skidmore a 6-3 lead. Union would keep the score close and twice trailed by only one point with the second time coming with 5:07 remaining in the first half on a layup by Donahue. Consecutive threes by the Thoroughbreds would push their lead to seven at 4:24 and then a layup by Mantas would increase the lead to eight. Donahue would score on a layup with 43 seconds remaining to put Union within six at halftime. The Dutchmen outscored Skidmore 18-8 in the paint in the first half.
 
Union was within five points of the lead at 14:05 of the second half following a three-point basket by Justin Gallo. Skidmore would go on a 25-3 run spanning just over six minutes of game time and scored 13 straight points at one point to open up a huge lead and run away with the game.
 
Overall, the Dutchmen shot 35.6 % from the floor while Skidmore shot 44.6%. Skidmore led in rebounds 37-27.
 
Union was held to just 16 points in the second half.
 
Union continues road play with a game against Hamilton on Friday night at 8 pm.
