Mary Donohue had 14 as the Union College women's basketball team opened Liberty League play with an 84-72 victory at Skidmore College Tuesday night. The Dutchwomen improved to 6-3 overall while the Thoroughbreds fell to 4-7 and 0-1 in their league opener.
Leah Pepe and
Lauren McCormick each added 14 points to lead the Dutchwomen. Shayla Madded added nine points and McCormick (8) and Pepe (7) combined for 15 of Union's 37 rebounds. Pepe and Donohue each dished out five assists.
Skidmore also had four players in double figures, led by 15 each from Jessie Kavana and Michela Ottati. Ismatu Alison-Konteh and Christina Gargiso scored 10 each, while Megan Gaugler led the hosts with seven rebounds.
Union shot 57% and held Skidmore to 35% shooting. Skidmore had a 41-37 rebounding advantage. The Dutchwomen had a 38-24 halftime lead, and the first half featured a big 20-8 start in the first 9:08 for the visitors. Skidmore got to within 12 at 53-41 with 11:12 left in the second half, but a 9-2 run in the next 4:27 made it a 62-43 lead. McCormick scored six of those points during that run.
The Dutchwomen return to action Friday night for a Liberty League game at Hamilton at 6 p.m.
