SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior guard Ian Fels scored a game high 20 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead Trinity College (CT) to a 76-68 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the first game of the Sig Makofski Men's Basketball Tournament at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Monday night.
With the win, the Bantams (7-4) will play in Tuesday's championship game at 8 p.m., while the Corsairs (4-6) will play in the consolation contest at 6 p.m.
Cameron Sutton scored 14 points, making six of his seven shots for Trinity, while Mick Distasio added 12 points. Eric Dean had nine points and the Bantams forced 22 turnovers while shooting 42% for the contest and outrebounding UMass Dartmouth, 36-34.
Four starters hit for double figures for UMass Dartmouth. Colin Burns had 17 points with seven boards and Justin Pulver pulled down a game best 11 rebounds with his 14 points. Brandon Stephens scored 14 points with four assists and Paul Rose had 13 for UMass Dartmouth, which shot 41%.
Trinity held a three point lead at the half, 37-34, with the bench outscoring the opponent 12-3. Stephens tied the game with 17:15 left in the second and UMass Dartmouth got up by as many as six (53-47 with 10:36 left). But Trinity went on a 9-3 run to tie it in the next 3:19 at 56-56, and took the lead for good at 5:16 on a layup by Dean. Trinity led by as many as nine (74-65 with 29 seconds left).
