SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior guard Justin Gallo scored a career high 34 points and sophomore guard
Joe Mason scored a career best 21 points as Union College defeated #20 Ramapo, 97-88 in the Sig Makofski Tournament at Union's Viniar Athletic Center Monday night.
The Dutchmen will face Trinity (CT) in Tuesday's championship game at 8 p.m., while Ramapo will face UMass Dartmouth in the consolation contest at 6 p.m. Union, 8-1, is off to the program's best start since starting 8-1 in 1999-2000, and Ramapo fell to 9-3.
Gallo made 10 of 12 free throws and added seven rebounds. Mason dished out nine assists and recorded eight of Union's 11 steals.
Keven Donohue scored 14 points and
Matt Covucci had a game high 13 rebounds, while
Drew Goldstein added 13 points for the Dutchmen, winners of six straight.
Gallo's 34 points was the highest point total for a Union player since Steve Madej scored 35 at home against SUNYIT on December 4, 2008.
Ramapo was led by Ahmad Hassan's 24 points, while LaQuan Peterkin scored 15 and Will Sanborn added 13. Anthony LoRusso had a game high 10 assists for the guests.
Union shot 48% while Ramapo shot 44%, and each team finished with 43 rebounds.
Trailing by five points with 6:59 left in the first half, the Dutchmen went on a 21-5 run and led 45-34 with 33 seconds left in the opening half. Union took a 45-36 lead into the halftime break. In the second half, Union led by 10 at 48-38 1:11 into the second. But Ramapo stormed back with a 29-17 run for a 67-65 lead with 7:11 remaining. With the game for the seventh time at 69-69 with 5:34 left, Gallo hit a three 33 seconds later and the Dutchmen never trailed again. Union led by as many as 10 four times in the final 1:53 en route to the victory.
