St. Cloud wins 4-1 over Dutchwomen in opening tournament

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- 
St. Cloud defeated Union by a score of 4-1 on Saturday to pick up the first win of the season. The game was played at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis as part of the East/West Showcase hosted by the University of Minnesota.

SCSU got on the board at the 13:30 mark of the first period on a goal by senior forward Brittany Toor. The first assist went to Lisa Martinson and second assist was credited to Michelle Burke. It was Toor's 10th career goal.

Exactly four minutes into the second period it was junior forward Alex Nelson finding the back of the net for her 12th career goal and giving the Huskies a two goal advantage. Martinson had the first assist, her second assist of the night, and Toor had the second assist on the goal.

It didn't take long for Union to answer the Huskies goal. Freshman Christine Valente scored for the Dutchwomen at the 5:37 mark of the second period with assists going to Bryanne Panchuk and Chelsey Heinhuis.  It was Valente's first career point and goal.

St. Cloud State added insurance at the 7:29 mark of the third period, as sophomore forward Molli Mott scored a goal to put the Huskies up 3-1. Assists went to Toor, giving her a three point night, and also to first year forward Abby Ness. The Huskies final goal was an empty net goal at the 18:19 mark of the third period. Senior forward, and captain of the Huskies, Jocelyn Zabrick lofted the puck from the opposite blue line and it found the back of the net.

The final shot count was 27-18 in favor of the Huskies.

Union will open the home season next Saturday, October 8, as the Dutchwomen host Sacred Heart at 4 p.m. at Messa Rink.
