Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY
– Junior midfielder Giovanna Velardo redirected a cross from freshman forward Mollie Gilchrist into the net with 7:59 to play in regulation to lift the Union women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over St. John Fisher at College Park.

Gilchrist found open space along the end line and fired a low cross that Velardo tipped in for the game-winning score, her first of the season.

After being outshot 7-1 in the first half, the Dutchwomen responded by outshooting St. John Fisher 11-3 in the second half.

In the opening minutes of the second half, freshman Whitney Bickford hit the post on a turnaround shot from 18 yards outs. Junior forward Jennifer Mansfield followed with a partial breakaway, firing just wide of the near post. Union (9-1, 1-1 Liberty League) continued to apply pressure before finally breaking through for the game-winner.

St. John Fisher carried the play for most of the first half, firing seven shots, including four on net, mostly from long range. Fisher's best opportunity to score came early in the first half, when Kaitlin Moran's flick header from just inside the 18-yard box was grabbed by graduate goalkeeper Mia Simone, who did not have to move for the save.

Union generated just one shot in the first half, as Gilchrist won a long ball and fired a shot off of Fisher goaltender Noel Peck who had charged out from the net to cut down the angle.

For the game, Union outshot St. John Fisher 12-10, and held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. Simone made six saves to improve to 9-1 on the season while St. John Fisher goalkeeper Noel Peck stopped three shots.

The Dutchwomen will take on Utica College at College Park on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
