Jeremy Welsh had two goals and one assist and sophomore goaltender
Troy Grosenick made 23 saves for his first career shutout to lead the Union College men's ice hockey team to a 5-0 victory over RIT (1-2-1) in front of 2,100 fans at Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena.
The Dutchmen (2-0-3) scored on their first shot of the game on an impressive individual effort by junior forward
Wayne Simpson. Simpson intercepted a pass up the wall and skated into the offensive zone on a three-on-one, firing a shot over the shoulder of Ruby to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds into the contest.
Union would score the first of three power play goals in the period just over five minutes later, with RIT's Brad McGowan in the penalty box for cross checking. A rebound off an initial shot from sophomore forward
Josh Jooris bounced to sophomore defenseman
Mat Bodie. Bodie passed cross-ice to Welsh, who shot a one-timer past Ruby at 5:36 to put Union up 2-0.
At 15:08, senior forward
Kelly Zajac scored a rebound off a
Shayne Gostisbehere shot from the point that deflected off the leg of junior forward
Kyle Bodie and right to Zajac's stick.
Welsh would score his second of the period in the final seconds of a 5-on-3 power play, as Bodie picked up another assist on a cross ice pass to set up the goal at 19:46.
Both teams had multiple power play opportunities in the second period, but a goal line save and a hit post prevented both teams from scoring late in the frame.
With sophomore forward
Daniel Carr in the penalty box for high sticking, RIT's Chris Haltigin fired a shot from straightaway that beat Grosenick between the pads, but Zajac swept the puck away before it crossed the goal line to help Union maintain its lead.
Welsh made a bid for his second hat trick of the season with under a minute to play in the period, firing a shot off the right post at the 19:40 mark.
Sophomore forward
Josh Jooris gave Union a 5-0 lead at 5:30 of the third period, scoring on a wrap-around after linemate
Daniel Carr worked to free the puck behind the net.
For the game, Union outshot RIT 44-23 and went three-of-seven on the power play. Union will take on New Hampshire in Durham, NH next Friday at 7:00 p.m. Union will host AIC Saturday night at 7 p.m. for Homecoming.
