SCHENECTADY, NY -- Mark Blazek scored 17 points and Jared Suderley and Anthony Keane scored 15 each to lead Hartwick to a come from behind 62-61 win at Union in the men's basketball opener for the host Dutchmen at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Hawks are now 4-0 on the season.
Hartwick did not take the lead in this game until Chris Ryder made two free throws with 1:58 left to make it 59-58 for the guests. Keane hit a three pointer with 1:19 left for a 62-58 lead, but Union's
Joe Mason made it a one point game again with a three pointer with 1:01 remaining. After a missed free throw by a Hartwick player with five seconds left, Union got a three point attempt off just that missed just before the buzzer.
Keven Donohue led Union with a game high 19 points and eight rebounds, while Mason had 13 points, seven assists and seven rebounds.
Rusmir Dzanko had eight points for the Dutchmen, who shot 42% for the game and had a 38-31 rebounding advantage.
Ryder had nine points for the Hartwick cause, as the Hawks shot 44% and recorded eight steals.
Union had a 39-32 lead at halftime, and took a 10 piont lead 2:01 into the second half at 44-34. When Donohue made a layup with 12:38 left in the second half, it was a 10 point lead for Union at 54-43. But in the next 10:40, the Hawks tied it at 58-58 with a 15-2 run capped by Ryder's first of the two free throws with 1:58 left. The run was fueled by five points by Keane.
Union returns to action Sunday with a 3 p.m. game at Marymount.
