Shayla Madden scored a career high 22 points and senior
Rachel Beaulac also netted a career best with 14 points to lead Union College to an 84-80 overtime win over Pitt-Bradford in the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa Inviational Tournament at St. John Fisher Saturday. After posting their first victory, Union is 1-1 on the young season.
Sophomore
Carolyn Niedzwiecki had 11 points and a game high nine rebounds, her personal bests, and
Brittney Kenney added 10 for the Dutchwomen. Senior
Mary Donohue also set a new career best, with eight rebounds, and Madden dished out five assists. Union shot 44% for the game and a blistering 67% in the overtime, making four of six shots.
Pitt-Bradford also featured four players win double figures, featuring Ashley Seidenstricker with 18 and Maria Costanza with 15. Caitlin Jordan had 14 points with seven boards and Hollie Rapp pulled down nine rebounds with 12 points. Pitt-Bradford had a 46-42 rebounding edge and shot 40%.
Union had a 37-33 lead at halftime but Pitt-Bradford had the biggest lead of the half at six at 49-43 with 13:48 left in the second half. A 16-6 run in 6:12 was capped by five straight points by Seidenstricker. But Union tied it on a 6-0 run and the second half featured seven ties. Beaulac gave Union a 69-67 lead on a layup with 1:15 left in regulation, but Jordan's layup with 31 seconds left knotted the game at 69-69 and sent it to the extra session.
In overtime, Pitt-Bradford was hot to start and led by five at 76-71 with 3:14 left in the five minute overtime period. Jordan had four points in the run. But Union took over from that point forward, with a layup and three pointer from Madden and a run of 10-4 for an 81-80 lead with 51 seconds left. Union outscored Pitt-Bradford, 13-4 over the final 3:14 to erase the deficit and post the first victory of the 2011-12 season.
Union continues play in the three team tournament Sunday when the Dutchwomen face the host, St. John Fisher, at 1 p.m.
