PITTSFORD, NY -- The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team, host of the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa Invitational, defeated Union,61-45 on Sunday afternoon. The win is Fisher's second-straight and second this season, bringing the Cardinals overall record to 2-2, while Union falls to 1-2 on the year.
Portia Velasco led the Cardinals in scoring, finishing with 14 on the day. The rookie also pulled in eight rebounds and dished out five assists. Camaryn Buckner pulled down a game-high 11 paired with her 13 points. Jessica Krzemien added seven points and six assists, while senior Meghan Soja contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
Union was led by
Brittney Kenney, who scroed eight points, and
Shayla Madden added seven points.
Marissa Peck and
Rachel Beaulac had seven rebounds each.
With two minutes gone in the second half, and the score 33-27 in favor of the home team, Fisher went on a 20-7 streak over the next nine minutes to increase its lead to 53-34. Sydney Bloomstein started the run with a layup, and Portia Velasco capped it off with two made free throws.
The score was tight for much of the first half, with Fisher holding a slim 27-22 lead at the end of the first stanza. The five-point difference was the largest margin of the first 20 minutes, as the score was mainly tied or within three points in the first half.
Union returns to action on Wednesday at Hamilton.
