Box Score

POTSDAM, NY
– Senior forward Brian Yanovitch had a goal and an assist and classmate Kelly Zajac recorded his 100th career point with an assist on Greg Coburn's third period goal to help lead the Union men's ice hockey team (5-1-3, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 3-1 win at Clarkson (6-2-2, 1-1-0 ECAC Hockey) in front of 2,678 fans at Cheel Arena.

Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick made a bid for his second consecutive shutout, but surrendered a third period goal at 12:24 of the third period to Clarkson's Julien Cayer, ending a shutout streak of 119:18. Grosenick finished the contest with 22 saves.

The Dutchmen got off to a fast start, with all of the damage coming at even strength from Union's third line. Yanovitch found junior forward Kyle Bodie out in front of the net from the corner.

Bodie's initial shot was stopped by Karpowich, but he put his own rebound into an open net at 6:28 to give Union a 1-0 lead. Bodie led all scorers with a goal and two assists on the night.

Yanovitch gave the Dutchmen a two-goal advantage just over two minutes later. Bodie found Yanovitch along the left wall in the neutral zone, and the senior forward skated cut around the Clarkson defense, and beat Karpowich under the arm to put the Dutchmen up 2-0 at 8:55. The goal was Yanovitch's first since scoring in a 4-3 win at St. Lawrence on Nov. 13. 2009.

The Dutchmen continued to carry the play in the second period as Bennett led the way with three shots on goal and had perhaps the best scoring chance of the period. Junior defenseman Shawn Stuart moved into open space inside the circle and fired low on Karpowich, who made the initial stop. Bennett found the rebound and stuffed a backhander into the pads at the 10:00 mark.

Coburn gave Union a 3-0 lead on the power play at 6:23 of the third period. With Clarkson's Nik Pokulok in the penalty box for boarding, Zajac fed Coburn, who cut into the slot and scored on a one-timer to give the Dutchmen a commanding lead.

With the assist, Zajac became the seventh Union student-athlete in the Division I era to record 100 points in his collegiate career.

Union finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play, while Clarkson was 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Union will host Brown on Friday night at Messa Rink in a 7:00 p.m. contest
