Goldstein scores 23 but Dutchmen lose at RPI, 74-66

Travis Jones scored 21 points and Mike Hammond added 13 to lead RPI over Union, 74-66 Saturday at East Campus Gym. The Dutchmen fell to 10-13 overall and 2-10 in the Liberty League while the Engineers improved to 14-7 overall and 8-3 in the league.

Matthew Pooley added 10 points and Mike Brion and Daniel Martin each had seven rebounds for RPI, which shot 41% and had a slight 42-38 rebounding edge.

Senior Drew Goldstein scored 23 points and fellow senior Matt Covucci had 11 points to go along with 11 rebounds for the Dutchmen, who shot at a 39% clip for the contest. It was Covucci's third double double in five games and his fifth of the season. Keven Donohue added 12 points and nine boards for the guests.

RPI had a 34-29 lead at the half. The Engineers led by five or less points through the first 8:04 of the second half, and when Donohue made a free throw with 11:56 left it was a two point game at 48-46 Engineers. But RPI went on an 11-0 run in the next 2:55 for a 59-46 lead. The run was fueled by four points and a steal by Hammond. Union got to within six on a Covucci layup with 36 seconds to play but Jones made two free throws with 25 seconds left to provide the eight point victory.

Union wraps up the season at home next weekend with games Friday vs. Clarkson (8 p.m.) and Saturday vs. St. Lawrence for Senior Day (4 p.m.).
