SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior forward Matt Pebole scored 19 points with six rebounds and four assists for Hobart in the Statesmen's 72-64 Liberty League men's basketball triumph at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. Hobart is now 7-1 to continue to lead the league while now standing 15-4 overall. The Dutchmen fell to 9-11 overall and 1-7 in the league.
Stefan Thompson scored 10 and dished out a game best seven assists for Hobart, while Adam Salzmann added seven rebounds. The Statesmen were solid off the glass with a 48-36 rebounding advantage and forced 16 turnovers. Hobart shot 36%.
Matt Covucci and
Keven Donohue led the Dutchmen. Covucci had a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, his third twinbill of the season. He also had five assists. Donohue posted 19 points and eight rebounds.
Drew Goldstein also had five assists and eight points. Union shot 46% for the game.
At the half, the visitors had a 33-29 lead. Union got it to within two 14 seconds into the second half at 33-31, but the Statesmen went on an 11-0 run in the next 2:04 for a 44-31 lead with 17:42 left. Union came back to tie it at 46-46 with a 15-2 run in a span of 4:48. The contest remained tight and Union took its first lead of the second half at 62-61 on a jumper by Covucci with 4:07 left. But Pebole hit two straight jumpers and after Dzanko got Union to within one, down 65-64 with 1:45 left, the Statesmen scored the final seven points, including five at the line.
Union hosts Hamilton Saturday at 4 p.m. while Hobart plays at Skidmore at 4 p.m.
