SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior forward Kristen Kush scored 27 points with a team best six rebounds and freshman guard Liz Douglass tallied 13 to lead William Smith to a 71-55 women's basketball victory over Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Herons improved to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League while the Dutchwomen fell to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in the league.
Molly Danahy scored 12 with game highs of five assists and four steals for the Herons, who shot 46% for the game and forced 22 turnovers to off set Union's 40-29 rebounding advantage.
Ray made six of nine shots and was four for four from three point land.
Lauren McCormick pulled down a game best nine rebounds and scored 11 points, while
Lauren Hennessey tallied six points. Union shot 32% for the night.
William Smith shot a blistering 57% in the first half en route to a 38-26 lead at the break. They closed the half with a 16-4 run in the final 6:08, featuring 10 points on five layups form Danahy. Union got to within 10 in the second half, just 13 seconds in on a layup by
Leah Pepe. But the Herons went on another run, this one 11-4, for a 49-32 lead with 14:42 remaining. The Dutchwomen got as close as 12 with 6:12 left on a Ray jumper, before the Herons put the contest away including a 19 point lead with 33 seconds left at 72-51.
Union has a fifth straight home game Saturday as the Dutchwomen host Hamilton at 2 p.m.
