PITTSFORD, NY -- Melissa Leonhard scored four goals and Mary Stimson tallied three to lead St. John Fisher to a 14-13 non league lacrosse victory over Union College at Growney Stadium Saturday. The Cardinals improved to 2-1 while the Dutchwomen fell to 1-1.
Courtney Clare and Taylor Hughes scored two goals each for the hosts, while Jill Zerrillo and Bridget Alberts scored one each.Caroline Trpcevski made three saves in the first half while also stopped three in the second half. Stimson and Leonhard each took a game high seven shots.
Union was led by Kristen Joyce, who scored five goals on seven shots, and Melissa Hine, who dished out three assists with her three goals. Chelsea Charette and Abby Stohler scored twice each and Brittany Fraser also found the back of the net for the Dutchwomen. Alexis Deeb made four saves in the Union nets. Charette took four shots, all on net, and Casey Dianni also had four shots. Kat Egizi had four ground balls.
The Cardinals had a 26-22 shot advantage while Union won 16 of the 29 draw controls. Union had 15 turnovers to 12 by Fisher. St. John Fisher led 4-1 and 6-3 (after Leonard scored with 12:37 left in the first half), but the Dutchwomen came back to tie the contest for the first time when Stohler scored to make it 6-6 with 7:08 left. The Cardinals had an 8-6 advantage at halftime. The second half remained close and Fraser scored for Union with 23 seconds remaining. Union the draw but the Cardinals forced a turnover and held onto the victory.
Union is idle until March 22 when the Dutchwomen face #8 Colby in Clermont, Florida. The Dutchwomen will also play #6 Trinity in the Sunshine State on March 24.
