Union men's lacrosse earns 11-7 win at Ithaca

ITHACA, NY
 – The Union men's lacrosse team (4-2) win a 11-7 non-conference game against Ithaca College (5-2) Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.

Freshman attack Rob Santangelo led all scorers with two goals and two assists, and Brendan Kinnane, Nate Greenberg and Nick Alfonzetti each added a pair of goals to lead the Dutchmen attack.

After a 4-4 tie at the seven-minute mark of the second period, Union netted four straight scores for an 8-4 lead early in the second half. Ithaca brought the game within one on a trio of goals, but the Dutchmen rattled off three straight to close out the game. The physical game featured 16 penalties and 14:30 of time served.

David Gal made 14 saves in goal for the Bombers, while junior goaltender Sean Aaron made 11 saves for his fourth win of the season.
 
Union jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage on goals from Santangelo, Kinnane and Taylor Galbraith, broken up only by Jay Lucas' unassisted score at 7:04 in the first. Ithaca's Michael Silipo went unassisted at the 12-minute mark of the second period before Tom Mongelli capitalized on a DiBetta feed to knot the game at 3-3. Santangelo answered with his second score of the game before Mongelli found junior Devin Weinshank to again bring the game to a stalemate.
 
The Dutchmen scored a pair of goals at the end of the second quarter from Kinnane and Greenberg to lead 6-4 and opened the second half netting another two from senior Derek Witheford and Alfonzetti to lead 8-4 at 9:26 in the third.
 
Ryan Lowe assisted Mongelli at 6:45 before freshman Jake Long and Lowe each used Lucas feeds to score man-up goals and bring the game within one, 8-7, with 32 seconds remaining in the third.
 
Union dominated the fourth quarter, scoring three goals and collecting 10 ground balls to the Bombers' one, en route to finalizing all scoring at 11-7.
 
The Dutchmen will return home to face Hamilton on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
