Field hockey loses 4-1 at WPI

Emily Pearce scored two goals as the Worcester Polytechnic Institute defeated Union College, 4-1 in a non-league field hockey game at WPI Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers are now a perfect 4-0 on the season while the Dutchwomen fell to 0-3.

Sasha Marokhovsky and Libbi Richardson scored the other goals for WPI, which won despite Union's 13-9 shot advantage. Union had 10 corners to the Engineers' four and WPI goaltender Liz Dufresne made nine saves. Union goaltender Mary McCune stopped four shots.

Pearce opened the scoring just 3:13 into the game, as she converted on a break away down field assisted by Danielle Antonellis. Pearce made it 2-0 at 25:11 on a quick drive from an assist from Richardson. Marokhovsky notched her second of the year at 33:06. She deflected a shot from Meghan Farrell for the 3-0 lead.

Isabel Zellweger scored the first goal of the Union season at 47:34. Dufresne made a save and a loose ball in front was converted by Zellweger to make it 3-1.

Richardson's second of the season finished the scoring at 60:56. Brie Newton had a nice pass to Richardson to set up the game's final tally. Zellweger had a game high six shots and Caroline Moran added two for the Dutchwomen.

Union is idle until September 20, when the Dutchwomen host Williams College. The home opener at Frank Bailey Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
