Mollie Gilchrist had a goal and an assist and the Union College women's soccer team overcame an early deficit with a pair of first half goals to defeat Buffalo State College, 3-1, in the opening game of the Rensselaer Invitational at the East Campus Stadium. With the victory the Dutchwomen improve to 3-0. The Bengals fall to 2-2.
Buffalo State came out strong in the first half, sustaining pressure on the Dutchwomen and eventually grabbing a 1-0 lead. The Bengals had two glorious chances stopped – one on a save and the other by the crossbar – before tallying in the seventh minute. Sophomore Jordan Dudish set up the tally with a cross that sailed into the box and was headed in by Tina Boberskyj from 10-yards out. The goal was the second of the season for Boberskyj.
Despite several more chances over the next 10 minutes, Buffalo State could not hold the lead as Union fought back to tie the game in the 18th minute. Sophomore
Melissa Mansfield carried the ball up the right side and sent a cross from 20-yards out to freshman
Mollie Gilchrist on the left side. Gilchrist quickly fired a shot from just inside the box that sailed past the keeper and into the right corner for her second marker of the season.
The Dutchwomen benefited from an untimely error in front of the Bengals goal just over five minutes later. Union's
Jessica Strang was the last player to touch the ball as she carried it up the sideline and crossed it into the middle inside the box. Linda Banfield Buffalo State's goaltender, attempted to clear the ball out but it hit one of her defenders and caromed into the net to give Union a 2-1 advantage in the 24th minute.
Union added a goal in the 81st minute when Gilchrist headed a ball to the front of the goal and it was buried by classmate
Emma Eddy. The goal was Eddy's first career tally.
Senior
Mia Simone earned the win in net for the Dutchwomen, stopping four shots. Banfield finished with five saves on the other end.
Union, which held an 18-13 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks, faces Simmons on Sunday afternoon at noon.
