No. 11 women's soccer falls to Skidmore, 1-0, in Liberty League opener

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY
-- The Union College women's soccer team had its winning streak snapped at six games after falling 1-0 to Skidmore on Wednesday night at Wachenheim Field in Saratoga Springs.

The win marks the fifth time this season the 6-1 Thoroughbreds have handed an opponent its first loss of the season.  The Dutchwomen are 6-1 and 0-1 in Liberty League play.

Neither team managed much offense through the first 39 minutes of the game.  Skidmore then took advantage of a late corner when Michelle Finan hit a well placed ball in the box that Rebeeca Russo headed past Union keeper Mia Simone for the game's lone goal at 39:19.

The Dutchwomen came out hard at the beginning of the second half, but the Skidmore defense settled down to record its fifth straight shutout.

Thoroughbred goalie Megan Sleezer had four saves to extend her scoreless streak to 459 minutes.

Skidmore outshot Union 10-8. Simone finished with six saves for the Dutchwomen, including two big stops late in the second half to keep the game close.

Union will take on RIT at College Park in another Liberty League contest on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
