The Dutchmen move to 8-1, defeating Nazareth 2-1 at College Park

BOX SCORE

SCHENECTADY, NY
– Junior Sebastiaan Jansen scored in the 67th minute to give the Dutchmen a 2-1 win over Nazareth College Tuesday night at College Park.  Now 8-1, Union leads the Liberty League with goals (35) and points (99).  Nazareth College moves to 4-4.

Jansen's winning shot came off of a beautiful set up from senior Kevan Benn.  Benn, who received a strong pass from sophomore Nick Vozzella, passed to Jansen straight from the mid line.  Jansen then buried the shot from 20 feet back, out of reach of Nazareth senior goalkeeper Kyle Connolly.  This marks the eighth goal of the season for Jansen, who leads the Liberty League in points (22) and assists (6).

The Golden Flyers' offense came out blazing, dominating the first half of the game.  Nazareth was first on the board with an unassisted goal from sophomore James Wheeler at the nine-minute mark.  The midfielder, who had four shots, was set up from a corner kick and nailed the side post before the shot bounced in.  It was Wheeler's third goal of the season.

The Dutchmen responded 27 minutes into the first half with an unassisted goal from senior Marc Zeyak, who returned from an injury earlier in the match.  After a corner kick from sophomore Jake Soodek, one of 13 for Union, Connolly quickly made the save but released the ball too soon.  Zeyak was waiting for the opportunity and took a shot out of mid-air to tie the game at 1-1.

Senior goalkeeper Mike Szczesniak was excellent in net, making four saves and earning his second win of the season.  Connolly made six saves on the match.  Senior Kevin Giron and freshman Kevin Janson both had outstanding defensive games, constantly putting pressure on the Golden Flyers' offense.  After a heated game riddled with collisions, Union outshot Nazareth 12 to eight.

The Dutchmen are back in action at College Park against Utica on Saturday, October 1st, at 7:00 p.m.
