TROY, N.Y. – Rusmir Dzanko and
Keith Callies combined for 46 points on 17 of 25 shooting to lead the Union College men's basketball team to an 89-77 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena.
Dzanko (Essex Junction, VT/Essex), a senior forward, led all scorers with 27 points on 12 of 15 shooting. He also had a team-high seven rebounds with two steals. Callies (San Antonio, TX/Kimball Union Academy), a sophomore guard, finished with 19 points, helped by 7 of 10 shooting from the floor.
As a team, the Dutchmen made 57% (35 of 61) of their shots in improving to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League. On the other side of the floor, they held Rensselaer to 32% on 29 of 90, including 10 of 53 (19%) from three-point range. RPI falls to 4-7 and 1-2.
Union connected on 51.4% of its first half shots and held a nine point lead, 43-34, at the break. Callies had 14 first half points, while Dzanko chipped in with nine points. RPI made just 14 of 45 shots (31.1%), including only 4 of 27 (14.8%) from behind the arc, in the first frame. Junior Redon Qello (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) had eight points and five rebounds to start the game.
The visitors opened up their lead to as many as 18 points, 62-44, in the second half, but Rensselaer continued to battle, pulling to within nine points, 84-75, with 1:13 left. However, the Dutchmen sealed the win with free throws down the stretch.
RPI was led by senior guard Matthew Pooley (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian School), who scored 19 points. Qello finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior Daniel Martin (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset) scored three points with a game-best nine rebounds.
Rensselaer, which came into the game averaging 90.7 points per contest, hosts Skidmore College on Saturday at 4pm, while the Dutchwomen host Bard at 4pm on Saturday. Both games are Liberty League contests.
