CANTON, NY -- Kelly Legg's three point play with 2:32 remaining in the second half lifted St. Lawrence University to a 49-47 women's basketball win over Union College at Brukman Gymnasium Saturday. The Saints improved to a perfect 7-0 in the Liberty League and 11-4 overall, while the Dutchwomen fell to 3-4 in the league and 7-8 for the season.
With 3:13 left Erica Spera gave the Saints a 46-45 lead on a jumper, but Union took a 47-46 lead with 2:44 remaining on a layup by
Shayla Madden. With 2:32 remaining, Legg's layup was good during a Union foul and she made the free throw to provide the eventual 49-47 final. Union had an opportunity to tie with 41 seconds left but missed a shot and after a time out with nine seconds left, Legg blocked a
Brittney Kenney shot as time expired.
Legg had 13 points and Spera added nine with a team high sevren rebounds. The Saints shot 33% for the game, but just 15% from three point land, and 78% at the line.
Kenney led Union with the double double with a game high 11 rebounds to go along with 12 points and five assists. It was her third double double of the season and tied her career rebounding high. She was six for six from the free throw line and eight of her rebounds came on the defensive side.
Rachel Beaulac scored 11 points and Madden and
Kate Thompson scored seven each. Thompson added seven rebounds for the Dutchwomen, who shot 37% and 71% from the charity stripe.
St. Lawrence had a 28-24 lead at the half, Union's largest lead in the second half was by six, twice, as late as 7:32 left after a Beaulac jumper made it 45-39. But the Saints went on a 10-2 run the rest of the way.
Union begins a three game league homestand Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against Bard.
