SCHENECTADY, NY -- Leslie Havens scored 17 points with four assists and six rebounds and Jess Kramer also scored 17 points to lead the Rochester Institute of Technology to a 55-52 Liberty League win over Union College Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Tigers improved to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in their first year in the league. The Dutchmen are now 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Brittney Kenney led the Dutchwomen with 13 points and
Kate Thompson continued her fine freshman season with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Shayla Madden added eight points. Union shot 33% for the game and outrebounded the Tigers, 41-30. RIT shot 39%. For the freshman Thompson, it tied her career high with her third nine rebound game, and she has 25 in the last three games.
Union had a 28-26 halftime lead. The Dutchwomen led by as many as 11, when Kenney's jumper with 9:21 left in the first half made it 22-11, but the Tigers went on a 17-6 run to close out the half.
RIT had a six point lead at 34-28 at 16:53 on a second half layup by Kramer. But the contest remained close and was tied at 39-39 with 11:33 left. Kramer's layup with 3:16 left gave the Tigers a six point advantage capping a 14-8 run then Union pulled to within one at 53-52 with 1:08 left after two free throws by Kenney. A Union shot was blocked by Anne Wapshare with 23 seconds left, and with 13 ticks remaining, Havens hit a layup to provide the final.
Union continues a homestand this week with Skidmore Friday night at 6 p.m. and RPI Saturday at 2 p.m.
