SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior guard
Joe Mason scored a career high 23 points to lift the Union College men's basketball team to a 79-65 Liberty League victory over visiting Rochester Institute of Technology Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchmen are now 3-5 in league play and 10-6 overall, while the Tigers are 2-6 in their first year in the league, and 6-11 for the season.
Mason also added five assists, four rebounds and three steals while
Keven Donohue scored 15 opints with a game high seven rebounds.
Evan Croll added a game best six assists with his 12 points and Terell Winney scored 10 for the Dutchmen. Union shot 51%, the third time this season with a 51% or better shooting mark. Union also had a 34-29 rebounding edge.
RIT was led by Justin Heisig's 19 points and 14 points with six rebounds by Brendan Harder. Ronnie Canestro dished out a team high five assists with eight points for the Tigers, who shot 43% for the contest.
Union led at the half, 41-30, and after trailing 7-5 3:04 into the game, went on a 21-7 run in the next 7:30 for a 12 point lead (26-14). Union led by as many as 15 twice in the first half. With the Dutchmen up by eight with 12:56 left in the second half, Union went on a 17-2 run over the next 5:52 led by six points from Donohue. The largest lead of the contest came at 24 with 5:09 left to play on a layup by Mason, before the reserves for both teams saw action.
The Dutchmen continue a busy home week with games against local rivals Skidmore (Friday at 8 p.m.) and RPI (Saturday at 4 p.m.).
