SCHENECTADY, NY –
Sophomore forward Matt Hatch had two goals and an assist, and junior forward Wayne Simpson added three assists to help No. 14/13 Union men's ice hockey (15-6-6, 9-3-3 ECAC Hockey) earn a 6-0 win over St. Lawrence (8-15-3, 4-9-1 ECAC) in front of 2,061 fans at Messa Rink.

Union earned its seventh straight win over St. Lawrence and swept the season series against the North Country travel partners (St. Lawrence, Clarkson) for the third straight year.

Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick (14-4-3) stopped all 26 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, as Union outshot St. Lawrence 41-26 for the game.

Senior forward Kelly Zajac, junior forward Jeremy Welsh, sophomore defenseman Mat Bodie, and freshman forward Max Novak all scored for the Dutchmen, who netted all of their goals at even-strength.

Zajac, who has a nine-game point streak, gave Union an early lead at 10:30 of the first period, stuffing in shot at the near post off a feed from Simpson for his sixth goal of the season.

Welsh followed with his team leading 18th goal of the season on a similar play just over two minutes later. Sophomore forward Daniel Carr had the initial shot on net, and Welsh crashed the near post for a rebound goal at 13:08, putting the Dutchmen up 2-0.

The score would remain that way until the final seconds of the second period. With time winding down in the frame, Zajac fired a wide-angle shot on net that St. Lawrence goaltender Matt Weninger (35 saves) kicked out to the opposite circle. Mat Bodie skated in from the point and found the top half of the net with just 3.8 seconds remaining in the period.

With the assist, Zajac moved to within one assist of the school record in the Division I era held by Adam Presizniuk '11 (83 assists).

Hatch scored the first of his pair of goals early in the third period, beating Weninger over the shoulder on a rush up the wing at 3:39.
Junior forward Kyle Bodie took a pass from freshman forward Daniel Ciampini and set up  a tap in goal for Novak at 9:52, helping Union increase its lead to 5-0.

With St. Lawrence on the power play midway through third period, Grosenick made his best save of the night to preserve the shutout, sliding from the opposite side of the crease to make a glove save on Greg Carey at 12:18. Union finished the night 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Hatch scored his second goal of the night at 18:23, carrying the puck in from the neutral zone and beating Weninger over the shoulder to give Union its sixth goal of the night.

With the win, Union moved into sole possession of first place in the ECAC Hockey standings with 21 points.

The Dutchmen return to action next Friday at Messa Rink when they take on Colgate in a contest that begins at 7:00 p.m.
