Donohue, Winney lead Union to Sig Makofski Championship and 69-54 win over Hamilton

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior Keven Donohue, the tournament Most Valuable Player, scored 13 points with 13 rebounds and Freshman Terell Winney scored a career high 21 points to lead the Union College men's basketball team to a 69-54 win over Hamilton College in the Championship Game of the 27th Annual Sig Makofski Tournament at Union's Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.

The Dutchmen improved to 7-1 with their seventh straight victory, while the Continentals fell to 10-2. Joining Donohue and Winney on the All-Tournament Team were Hamilton's Greg Newton and Pat Sullivan, Matt Grossbard of Roger Williams and Dave Foltz of Wells. Donohue had 27 points and 21 rebounds in the tournament and Winney had 29 points in helping to lead Union to the tourney triumph.

Dohohue's double double featured 11 defensive rebounds. Winney made seven of his nine shots and was a perfect six for six at the line. Rusmir Dzanko added 11 points with five rebounds and Keith Callies scored nine with three assists. Union shot 46% for the game, including a blistering 61% (17 for 28) in the second half. The Dutchmen turned the ball over just six times for the second straight night in the tournament.

Hamilton was led by 11 points by Sullivan and nine from Newton, while Hans Schulte had seven points and six rebounds and Joseph Lin and Bradley Gifford each had six points. The Continentals had four blocks and outrebounded the hosts, 42-39. Hamilton shot 34% for the game.

Both teams shot 32% in a defensive minded first half, as each squad made 10 of 31 shots. Union had a 25-22 lead at halftime. The Dutchmen opened the second half with a 9-2 run for a 12 point lead at 36-24 just 3:28 into the second half. Hamilton was as close as six with 9:36 left after two free throws by Sullivan made it 46-40. But Union put it away with a 17-8 run in the next 7:08 for a 61-46 lead with just 3:26 left in the second half. Donohue scored six points and Winney had four points and an assist in that run. The Dutchmen led by as many as 17 (68-51) with 1:40 left and posted a win against the former Liberty League rival.

Union opens Liberty League play Friday night when the Dutchmen host St. Lawrence at 8 p.m.

The All-Tournament Team featured MVP Keven Donohue, Terell Winney, Greg Newton and Pat Sullivan.
