SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore
Brittney Kenney recorded her first career double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds but the Union College women's basketball team's comeback efforts fell short in a 67-63 home defeat to Sage College at the Viniar Athletic Center Wednesday night. The Dutchwomen fell to 4-4 after the non-league contest, while the Gators improved to 5-5.
Kara Hackett scored a game high 16 points and Carly Vallee added 12 while Amie Jefferson matched Kenney with 11 rebounds for the Gators. Megan Bowman added seven boards and five assists for Sage, which had a 43-41 rebounding advantage and shot 43%. The Gators held Union to 35% shooting. Sage made 16 of 18 free throws on the night.
Rachel Beaulac scored 12 points with six rebounds and
Shayla Madden also had six boards with 11 points for the Dutchwomen.
Mary Donohue matched Bowman with five assists.
The Gators led by as many as 15 in the first half, 34-19 with 2:47 left, and had a 34-22 lead at halftime. Hackett scored 10 in the first 20 minutes. A jumper by Hackett with 18:01 left in the second half made it 36-26 for Sage, but the Dutchwomen stormed back and pulled to within two on consecutive three pointers by
Madeline Granato, and the run of 13-6 in 6:46 made it a two point game at 44-42. But that was as close as the hosts would get, and Sage was back up by 11 on a jumper by Jefferson for a 60-49 lead with 4:02 remaining. The Gators made seven of eight free throws in the final 41 seconds, and four in the last 13 seconds, to hold on for the triumph.
