SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kelly Legg scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and Casey Capello added 11 to lead St. Lawrence to a LIberty League opening 64-52 women's basketball victory at Union College Friday night.
Katie Edgerton added 10 points with six boards and Cassie St. Hilaire also had six rebounds for the Saints, who improved to 5-4 overall. The Saints shot 39% for the night.
Brittney Kenney scored 13 points and
Rachel Beaulac had a game high 10 rebounds for the Dutchwomen, now 4-5 for the season.
Shayla Madden contributed nine points and
Kelsey McDonald scored eight off the bench for Union, which shot 31% but had a 45-43 rebounding advantage for the game.
St. Lawrence had a 35-24 lead at halftime. The Saints got up to as high as 17 with 8:40 left (52-35) to play in the second half on a three pointer by Katie Murray. Union pulled to within six with 1:34 left when McDonald made a layup to make it 58-52, completing a 17-6 run 7:04. But the Saints made four free throws in the final minute.
Union is back at home Saturday to host Vassar at 2 p.m.
