Vassar comes back for 72-67 win over Dutchmen




SCHENECTADY, NY -- Ethan Shanely scored 18 points and Vassar came back from a 16 point second half deficit to pull out a 72-67 win over Union in a Liberty League men's basketball game at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday. The Brewers are 5-5 overall and 1-1 in league play while the Dutchmen fall to 7-3 and 0-2 in the Liberty League.

Johnny Mrlik scored 14 opints and Alex Snyder had nine rebounds with his nine points for the Brewers. Nicholas Justiz dished out seven assists. Vassar was outrebounded 33-31 and shot 45%, 48% in a big second half.

Union had three players in double figures, led by Rusmir Dzanko's 13 points, while Joe Mason added 11 with a game high eight assists. Terell Winney added 10 points and Keven Donohue had a team high seven rebounds. Union shot 47% for the game.

The Dutchmen shot 58% in the first half, making 16 of 28 shots, for a 37-28 lead. Union led by six at 17:28 after Justiz pulled the Brewers closer on a jumper, making it 41-35. The Dutchmen went on a 13-3 run in a span of 3:45 as a layup by Mason gave the hosts a 16 point lead, 54-38 with 13:43 left to play in the second half. Mason had five points during that stretch. But the Brewers came back and tied the contest with 2:42 left to play, When Mrlik hit a three to make it 62-62 at that time, the Brewers had the first tie since seven minutes into the first half. Shanley made four free throws and a three pointer during that game changing, 24-8 run.

Union regained the lead on free throws by Dzanko with 2:27 left, making it 64-62. But Justiz hit a three and after a Justiz free throw on the play, it was 66-64 Vassar. Mason made a layup with 1:20 left for the 66-66 tie, the final tie of the day. Shanley hit two free throws at 1:06 (68-66), and after Donohue made the first free throw at 30 seconds left, the second was rebounded by the Brewers and they made four late shots at the line to seal the win.

Union has a busy league week ahead, with games at Hobart Tuesday and at RPI Friday before returning home to host league newcomer Bard Saturday at 4 p.m.
