BOSTON – After an
Emma Rambo goal, the Dutchwomen concede four unanswered goals to Northeastern as Union is defeated 4-1 at Matthews Arena Friday night.
Northeastern had their opportunities early as they held the early advantage in shots. However, the Huskies shots were off the mark. Union's first chance started when Kendall Coyne was sent to the penalty box for checking at 14:59. Despite the power play, the match was brought to even strength when
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine was penalized for interference a minute later.
Northeastern was able to get some power-play shots but the shot blocking of the Dutchwomen was there to prevent any danger. The Huskies continued to find their shots blocked as the duo of
Maddy Norton and
Ashley Johnston clogged the shooting lanes for Northeastern.
The Dutchwomen were on the power play again as Paige Savage was sent to the box for checking. Union tried to get something going with
Rhianna Kurio and
Jessica Kaminsky but the penalty kill prevented anything from finding the net.
Union went up 1-0 with 2:07 left in the period as
Camille Corbin stole a breakout bid and passed over to Rambo. The forward's initial backhand shot was stopped by Desjardins, but Rambo cleaned up her own mess for her second goal of the season.
Northeastern came out of the second period firing and aggressive on offense. Casey Fields put a scare to the Dutchwomen defense as she rung the cross bar above
Alana Marcinko blocker early. Moments later,
Stefanie Thomson found herself in the penalty box after being penalized for checking. The first line for the Huskies came through, as Casey Pickett was able to net her second goal of the season from a Savage pass to equalize the score
Kathryn Tomaselli was looking to give the Dutchwomen the lead again as she had a break to the net. However, she never had full control of it and was blocked by Chloe Desjardins.
Desjardins stood tall as
Maddy Norton tried to regain the momentum in the half. The Dutchwomen were able to go on the power play again and had a great opportunity near the goal but Desjardins stopped a flurry of shots near the net to eventually kill the penalty.
Marcinko and the Dutchwomen were able to fend off the Huskies attack in the final moments making multiple saves to take the 1-1 deadlock into the third period.
Last year's Hockey East Rookie of the Year Kendall Coyne took over the third period. The forward tested Marcinko right away in the third period with a break to the left side but the netminder was able to turn the shot away. Ann Doherty had a free look in the middle of the offensive zone but Marcinko was able to make the stop. The Huskies attack continued as Coyne was tripped by
Haley Welch to put Northeastern on the power play. Marcinko was tested right away as a scramble ensued on the left side of the net. The Union netminder made several stops to keep Northeastern out of the net.
Coyne however got her chance with :56 seconds remaining on the power play when she flew by the Dutchwomen defense to give the Huskies their first lead of the match with the assist from Maggie Brennolt. The forward struck again as Coyne was on the end of a puck thrown in the middle of the Dutchwomen defense to put away her second goal of the game. She completed her hat-trick as she snuck one under the pad of
Alana Marcinko to make it 4-1.
The Dutchwomen were able to get on the power play as
Stefanie Thomson tried to get Union back into the match. Despite their efforts, the Northeastern forecheck hindered the attack and the Huskies held on to win 4-1.
Northeastern held the advantage in shots and faceoff wins with 45 and 35 respectively. Union rifled off 25 shots in the loss and won 18 faceoffs. The Huskies power play was 2-3 on the night while the Dutchwomen's special teams play went 0-45.
Alana Marcinko made 41 saves on the night and was given her first loss of the season while Chloe Desjardins improves to 3-0-0 on the campaign.
