ONEONTA, NY -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team defeated visiting Union College 4-1 Friday. Oneonta (11-6) out shot the Dutchwomen, 21-6, while holding a decided advantage in penalty corners 15-3.
The Red Dragons got on the scoreboard first today as junior Samantha Smith scored an unassisted goal in the ninth minute of the match. Smith was able to collect a rebound in front of the goal before slipping it by the Union goalie.
Union (7-9) came back and tied the score on an unassisted goal by junior
Nicole Merigliano on a reverse stick shot that beat Oneonta goalie Tess Tracy. Tracy played 60 minutes today and recorded her 10 win of the season. The goal was Merigliano's fifth of the season.
Molly McCune made 10 saves for the Dutchwomen.
Four minutes later, senior Ashley Johnson took a pass and moved enough to turn herself to get a shot off that went to the back of the goal. The goal came in the 21st minute and gave the Red Dragons the lead for good.
In the second half, junior Ashley Morgan scored a pair of goals, which were both assisted by Johnson. The goals came off corners where the two worked a couple of passes before Morgan finished them off. The first goal was a redirect of a pass by Johnson while the second goal was a direct shot off the pass.
Union ends the 2012 season with Senior Day Saturday. The Dutchwomen will host Vassar at Frank Bailey Field at 2 p.m.
