Men's soccer gets second chance at Vassar in Liberty League semifinal

Alex Pack and the Dutchmen will be looking to for their first win against Vassar since October 24, 2010.

Game Notes

The men's soccer team will be traveling to Poughkeepsie, NY for the second time this season as the No. 4 seeded Dutchmen will take on the No. 1 seeded Brewers of Vassar College in the Liberty League semifinal Thursday, November 1, starting at 2:30 p.m.

Tale of the Tape
Union comes into the match boasting a 12-4-0 record and 5-3-0 in Liberty League play while Vassar finished in first in the Liberty League with a 5-1-2 record and 11-4-2 overall. Vassar is also carrying the longest unbeaten streak in the conference with a six-game unbeaten streak.

Last Time Out
The previous matchup of these two teams occurred last week as the Dutchmen were defeated in overtime on a goal by Tom Weichert with a score of 2-1 as time was expiring in the first overtime period. Sebastiaan Jansen temporarily had the Dutchmen up in the match as he netted his 19th goal on the season in the 58th minute but Zander Mrlik scored the equalizer just 10 minutes later. Ryan Carter tied his career-high of 11 saves while Ryan Grimme had six in the match.

All-Time Series
In the all-time series against the Brewers, the Dutchmen have a 19-7-3 record. However, Union has not defeated Vassar since October 24, 2010 when the Dutchmen won in a high-scoring affair with a 5-4 win at College Park.

Scouting Vassar
In conference play, Vassar comes into the match scoring 17 goals on 141 shots, ranking third in both those categories. The Dutchmen have scored 19 goals on 121 shots, placing first and sixth respectively.

For the Brewers, Vassar is led by Juliano Pereira and Tom Wiechart. The duo has combined for 15 of the 40 goals the Brewers have scored this season. Defensively, Ryan Grimme leads the back as the netminder has started 13 games this season and has only conceded 10 goals this season.

The Particulars
The Dutchmen are led by Sebastiaan Jansen who has led the Liberty League this season with 20 goals, a single season program record. Alongside Jansen on the offensive front is Benjamin Goulb (3-3-9) and Nick Vozzella (1-4-6). Defensemen, Alex Pack and goalkeeper Ryan Carter lead the defensive unit. Pack has started every game this season and was the player who setup the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win against then No. 9 St. Lawrence. Carter in his sophomore campaign as compiled a 0.96 goals against average and has appeared in all 16 games.

Union scored the most goals in conference play this season with 19 while conceding nine in eight games played.

Can't Slow Down Sebbie
Jansen's 2012 campaign has seen the South African native score at least one goal in every game but one (Oct. 3 vs. RPI). The striker has won the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week four time and been named to the Honor Roll twice. Jansen averages 2.75 points per game and 1.25 goals per game, ranked fourth and fifth in Division III respectively. Sebastiaan has also broke the program's career points record with 107, passing Craig Jeffries '75

Coach Jeff Guinn
In the Dutchmen's win against Bard, Jeff Guinn became the all-time leader in program history with 149, passing Bob Magee. Additionally, Guinn has led the Dutchmen to their 12th consecutive winning season.

What's at Stake
The winner of the semifinal game will either see Rensselaer or St. Lawrence in the Liberty League Championship on Saturday, November 3.
