Kathryn Tomaselli scores the only goal for Union (2-5-0, 0-2-0 ECAC) as Syracuse (5-4-0, 2-0-0 CHA) escapes with the 2-1 win at Messa Rink Friday evening.
It only took five minutes in the game for the Dutchwomen to get on the board as
Rebecca Babiak dished off the pass to
Bryanne Panchuk who directed it towards the net to find Tomaselli with the tip in for her second goal of the season. In addition, the assist by Babiak was her first collegiate point of her career.
Syracuse battled back as the Dutchwomen conceded penalties two penalties in the last 10 minutes of the period. However, the penalty kill unit for the Dutchwomen contained the Syracuse attack as Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Margot Scharfe took their chances on netminder
Shenae Lundberg.
Shortly after the second Dutchwomen penalty, Jacquie Greco was able to slip one by Lundberg to level the score. Greco beat Lundberg stick side, as she was set-up with some cross-ice passes by Scharfe and Caitlin Roach. Union's
Christine Valente and
Rhianna Kurio had some opportunities to recapture the lead before the first intermission but Kallie Billadeau was there to make the stops, tallying 11 saves in the first period.
The Dutchwomen found themselves in trouble in the second period as two more penalties put the Orange on a 5-3 power play. However, the Union defense endured surges by the Syracuse power-play as Lundberg was called upon to make two goal line saves as the Syracuse forwards poked away at the puck. The Union netminder kept the Orange off the scoreboard with 14 saves in the second. Additionally,
Haley Welch came up with a critical block in the second stanza, as Brittany Krebs was part of a three-on-one rush that was thwarted by the sophomore defenseman.
Syracuse pounced on the defense in the final period of play, as the Orange was able to go ahead early. In the third minute of the period, Akane Hosoyamada set-up Allie Lacombe that found the net glove side of Lundberg to give the Orange their first lead of the game. Union however was able to create a myriad of chances because with
Stefanie Thomson,
Emma Rambo and Valente. The Dutchwomen were given almost 10 minutes of power play time including a game misconduct given to Nicole Ferrara for butt-ending. Despite Union's efforts, Billadeau prevented any chances from going in as she made six saves in the final period to give Syracuse their fifth win of the season.
Billadeau was credited with the win, as she is 4-1-0 on the season while Lundberg is given the loss and drops to 1-2-0. The netminders had saves of 27 and 29 respectively.
