The Dutchwomen score a season-high four goals with a pair coming from
Stefanie Thomson in the third period to aid Union in a 4-1 win over Syracuse at Messa Rink Saturday afternoon.
Syracuse had the first scoring chance in the match as Cara Johnson tested netminder
Shenae Lundberg but the sophomore goaltender managed to smother the puck and kept the Orange off the scoreboard early. Union's offense began to gain momentum, as
Courtney Turner,
Jessica Kaminsky and
Jeannie Sabourin were able to get shots on target. However, it was
Camille Corbin who struck first as the forward netted her first goal of the season to open up the Dutchwomen scoring being assisted by
Nicole Bartlett and Lizzy Otten. After a pass from Otten, Bartlett made a shot-pass to Corbin where she tipped in the puck to the right of goaltender Kallie Billadeau.
Syracuse was able to go on the power play twice in the period but could not slip one by Lundberg as the Dutchwomen led 1-0 at the first intermission.
Union's defense was tested right away in the second period as Shiann Darkangelo came away from coverage and struck two quick shots. Despite her efforts, Lundberg was there to make the pad save on her left side to prevent the scoring chances.
After killing their third penalty of the game, the Dutchwomen were able to get on the power play with a tripping call made on Holly Carrie-Mattimoe. The special teams unit for the Dutchwomen came through, as
Rhianna Kurio was able to score on a second chance rebound to score her first of the season being assisted by
Christine Valente.
Syracuse came back with a surge of shots from their forward including a near loft pass to Sadie St. Germain that nearly caught the Dutchwomen defense off-guard but was snuffed out by Lundberg. Moments later, tri-captain Carrie-Mattimoe separated herself from the Dutchwomen defense as she cut the Orange deficit in half. The forward sniped one by Lundberg glove side being set up by Nicole Ferrara and Kallie Goodnough off the faceoff.
In the last minute of the third period, Thomson was able to recapture the two-goal with a wrist shot that lifted over the shoulder of Billadeau to make it 3-1. Bartlett and Kaminsky freed up the forward with a clear shooting lane with some quality passing to beat the goaltender high nearside.
In the final stanza of play, Thomson struck again as she broke towards the net and beat Billadeau again as Turner and Kaminsky were credited with the assist. Syracuse relieved Billadeau with Julie Bengis as she made her season debut. The freshman was peppered with shots from the Union attack but kept the score at 4-1 as she made 11 saves in 9:30 of play. As time was expiring in the third period, Ferrara was able to net a goal as Kallie Goodnough passed it back to the blue line for the forward to beat Lundberg from range. However, the Orange ran out of time as the Dutchwomen earned their third win of the season.
Billadeau was issued her second loss of the season at 4-2-0 while Lundberg earns her second win at 2-2-0. Lundberg paced the goaltenders in saves with 31 while Billadeau tallied 17. Shots were in Syracuse's favor with a slight edge of 33-32. The Dutchwomen penalty kill kept the Orange at-bay as Syracuse went 0-4 on the man-advantage while the Union power-play was 1-4 on the afternoon.
