Amy Loya scored a team high 14 points but the Union College women's basketball team lost the 2012-13 season opener at Hartwick College, 58-55 Tuesday night. The Hawks improved to 2-1.

Kate Thompson scored 12 points and senior guard
Shayla Madden also scored 12 for the Dutchwomen, while
Kelsey McDonald scored 10 points.
Brittney Kenney led all Dutchwomen with eight rebounds while Loya, McDonald and kate Thompson had seven boards each in a balanced rebounding attack. McDonald had a gme high four assists and Loya also posted three steals while making six of eight from the line.
Hartwick was led by Kate Purcell's 22 points and 11 rebounds and Maria Foglia's 10 points, while Brittney Dumas added eight. Purcell made all eight free throws and added three steals while pulling down seven of her boards on the defensive end.
Two free throws from Purcell broke a 54-54 deadlock with 35 seconds to go to put the Hawks up to stay. After Union made one of two free throws after a Hartwick foul with 26 ticks left to pull to within one, the Dutchwomen fouled to put 'Wick on the line once again. Tracey Koch pulled down the rebound on the second miss from a teammate. Koch was fouled with 14 seconds left and she made both attempts to put her team up three and a final three point attempt by Union prior to the buzzer did not convert.
Union led 29-27 at halftime and shot 47% in the first half while shooting 42% for the night. The Dutchwomen held the Hawks to 33% shooting for the game, including just 30% (8 for 27) in the second half. Hartwick had a 38-34 rebounding advantage for the night. Union shot 67% from the free throw line and the Hawks shot 63%.
Union returns to action this weekend at the Woodcliffe Hotel & Spa Invitational Tournament hosted by St. John Fisher. The Dutchwomen play Farmingdale State College Saturday at 5 p.m. at Fisher, and play in the consolation (12 p.m.) or championship (2 p.m.) Sunday.
