PITTSFORD, NY -- Sophomore forward
Kate Thompson recorded a career high 15 rebounds and scored 11 points to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 48-45 victory over SUNY Farmingdale at the Woodcliffe Hotel & Spa Invitational at St. John Fisher Saturday.
It was the first victory of the young season for the Dutchwomen (1-1), while the Rams fell to 0-3. Union wil now play in the championship game at 2 p.m. against the host school St. John Fisher, which defeated John Jay, 71-55 later in the evening.
Thompson had eight boards on the offensive side and also added three steals. Her total was the highest by a Dutchwoman since Lauren McCormick had 18 at home in a win over RPI on January 28, 2011.
Shayla Madden scored 15 points and added six rebounds and
Brittney Kenney had 10 rebounds with seven points. Union shot 27% but held the Rams to 30% shooting, and also had a 42-40 rebounding advantage.
Siohban Purvis led Farmingdale with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Nicky Young scored nine points. Lushanta Saradel had seven points and seven rebounds and Nikita Green dished out seven assists with nine rebounds.
The teams were tied at 16-16 at halftime. Thompson completed a three point play with a free throw with 3:38 left for a 41-40 lead, a lead that was never relinquished by the Dutchwomen.
Kristin Schmidt made two layups in the final minutes in the victory.
